Rapid prototyping of numerically expressed problems is essential for a broad range of research areas. Finding the solution for computational scientific and engineering problems often requires experimenting with various algorithms and different parameters using the feedback from several iterations. Therefore, being able to quickly prototype the solution is critical for a timely and successful scientific discovery. In this book, I have explored the possibility of seamlessly executing sequential scientific applications in parallel. The idea is to introduce implicit data parallelism in order to provide a high-productivity and high-performance framework. I introduce two new projects, DistNumPy and Bohrium, that strive to provide a high-performance back-end for Numerical Python (NumPy) without reducing the high-productivity of Python/NumPy. I present several performance studies that demonstrate good scalable performance on a variety of architectures: from a small Ethernet Linux cluster with 32 CPU-cores to the Cray XE-6 supercomputer Hopper with 1536 CPU-cores.

Hyperpolarized Gas MRI to Evaluate Emphysema

Characterized by destruction of distal parenchymal airspaces, emphysema is a good candidate for the application of new magnetic resonance (MR) diffusion imaging techniques that use hyperpolarized helium-3 (He-3) and xenon-129 (Xe-129) gases to probe the restricted diffusion of gas in the lung. Besides the importance of detecting and diagnosing emphysema at early stages, which could reduce disease severity and maximize the effectiveness of treatment, the scientific community also needs a better biomarker for emphysema with a higher sensitivity than the gold standard, pulmonary function tests, and without the ionizing radiation of computed tomography. A primary goal of this project was to create a reproducible animal model of emphysema disease, and with it demonstrate the efficacy, sensitivity and reproducibility of hyperpolarized He-3 and Xe-129 diffusion (ADC) measurements. Both He-3 and Xe-129 ADC measurements demonstrated excellent reproducibility, and strong correlations were found between these values and the distal airspace size as measured by lung morphometry. The last goal of this project was to investigate the characteristics of diffusion sensitization based on multiple bipolar gradient waveforms, which have the potential to extend access to much shorter diffusion times.

Scientists working or interested in the properties of wires at a subnanoscale were brought together in Les Houches (France) from 6 to 10 May 1996. Subnanoscale wires can be fabricated either by surface physicists (atomic wires) or by synthetic chemists (molecular wires). Both communities present their foremost advances using, for example, STM to assemble atomic lines atom for atom, to fabricate a mask for such a line or using the wide range of chemical synthesis techniques to obtain long, rigid and conjugated oligomers. Interconnecting such tiny wires to sources (voltage, current) continues to demand a great technological effort. But nanolithography associated with microfabrication or STM are now clearly identified paths for measuring the electrical resistance of an atomic or a molecular wire. The first measurements have been reported on Xe , benzene, C ' di(phenylene-ethynylene) showing 2 60 the need for a deeper understanding of transport phenomena through subnanowires. Such transport phenomena like tunnel (off-resonance) transport and Coulomb blockade have been discussed by theorists with an emphasis on the exponential decrease of the tunnel current with the wire length versus the ballistic regime of transport.
